Internship

• Getting to put in a lot of surgery hours- not only did this help me practice technical skills, but I really feel like I gained a lot of confidence
• Feeling supported by the staff and doctors- I always felt comfortable asking questions and didn’t feel like a nuisance
• Getting to work in a hospital with advanced imaging! I feel spoiled by having access to a CT

I wish I would have reviewed more of my pharmacology notes! But I think that will come more with time.

Great! Both the doctors and technicians explained how to do things, and then let me learn by actually practicing skills myself. A particular shoutout to Leigh and Ashton for being great teachers this summer for so many technical skills! I also found going through cases with Dr. Varga very helpful.

Quite a few! One I was not expecting was how to handle negative feedback as a doctor. Not every client will be satisfied with you, but that’s not necessarily a reflection of your capabilities as a doctor. I also became a lot more comfortable with accessing and using good resources when I had questions about a case or treatment.

I really enjoyed getting to meet and develop friendships with everyone on the team. I was always excited to come to work and think that AVDH has a great workplace culture.

• Lots of time to practice ultrasound skills including echocardiogram
• Cytology on a variety of tissue and fluid samples
• Teeth extractions
• Surgical skills: intradermal suture pattern, use of ligasure, tips for surgical efficiency

This internship exceeded my expectations.

My next step is to prepare for clinics which begin this May. I am looking forward to gaining more skills from specialties such as cardiology, internal medicine, and oncology. I look forward to staying in contact with y’all and perhaps discussing interesting cases with Dr. Varga.

Absolutely- I had the opportunity to get so much hands-on experience that most students don’t have access to during their time at veterinary school. The advanced imaging and technology offered at AVDH is really like nowhere else.
