Otology
Understanding ear disease prevention
Ear disease affects at least one-third of all dogs and up to ten percent of all cats at some point in their lives. These conditions are among the most painful and debilitating for animals. The use of fiber optic otoscopes has revolutionized the practice of otology in veterinary medicine.
Types of Ear Disease in Pets
Chronic and acute otitis in dogs and cats is often triggered by allergies, parasites, or foreign bodies.
Symptoms of Otitis
Common symptoms include head shaking, scratching at the ears, head tilting, ear drainage, difficulty swallowing, and loss of balance.
Diagnosing Ear Disease
Diagnosis begins with a physical examination, fiber optic examination, microscopic cytology, and possibly an ear culture. Advanced cases may require additional diagnostic tests under anesthesia, such as deeper fiber optic examination, X-rays, and biopsies.
Treating Ear Disease
Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis. Medications, including antibiotics and antifungals, are often prescribed both orally and topically. Ear-cleaning solutions and anti-inflammatory medications may also be used. Mild to moderate cases may require deep fiber optic ear cleaning, while severe cases often necessitate conventional or laser surgery.
