What is CT?
Computed Tomography (CT), computerized tomography, or computerized axial tomography (CAT), is an advanced imaging technique used for diagnostic purposes. An X-ray tube rotates 360 degrees around the patient, emitting a series of X-rays. A computer analyzes these X-rays to create detailed images of thin slices of tissue (1-10 millimeters). The computer then reconstructs these slices into a comprehensive image, similar to assembling slices of bread into a loaf.
Why are CT Scans Important?
CT scans allow veterinarians to view detailed images of your pet’s internal organs and structures from multiple angles. This technology provides information more quickly and often more economically than traditional tests, x-rays, and exploratory surgeries.
Is CT Like an X-ray?
Yes, CT uses X-rays combined with computer technology to generate detailed images of your pet’s internal organs and structures.
What is Involved in a CT Study?
CT scans require multiple x-ray beams to penetrate the body at various angles to create individual image slices. To ensure accuracy, the patient must remain still during the procedure. Therefore, sedation or anesthesia is often necessary. If anesthesia is required, your pet must fast overnight (no food or water after 10:00 pm). A catheter will be placed in your pet’s leg for administering anesthetic drugs, fluid therapy, and occasionally contrast agents. Our staff veterinarian will contact you once the CT scan is completed and your pet has recovered from anesthesia.
Test Interpretation
The detailed information provided by CT scans allows for informed decisions regarding your pet’s treatment. All CT images are reviewed by our board-certified radiologist, and the results are forwarded to your regular veterinarian.
